Suspended roller coaster
By Matthew Fitzpatrick
A suspended roller coaster is a roller coaster with the cars suspended from the track. The part of the car the passengers sit in can swing side to side and is connected to another part that contains the wheels. They cannot swing forward and back, that would cause problems. Because of the swinging, roller coasters like this cannot do inversions, the inverted roller coaster type can. An inverted coaster is similar to a suspended except that they do not swing freely. The first suspended roller coaster was The Bat. It was built in 1981 by Arrow Dynamics as a prototype Suspended coaster at Kings Island in Ohio. It had many problems and was removed in 1986 after being closed for 2 years. The track was not banked, the break fins were mounted on the bottom of the car not near the track, and violent swinging put a great amount of stress on the track and support structure. Later after making improvements to their designs Arrow, in 1984, built Big Bad Wolf at Bush Gardens Williamsburg and XLR-8 at Astroworld in Houston. XLR-8 was demolished, The Big Bad Wolf is currently operating, but it is scheduled to be closed after this season. XLR-8 and The Big Bad Wolf were the first successful suspended roller coasters. Arrow has built a total of 10 suspended roller coasters, Vekoma built four, Caripro built twelve, and Setpoint built 2.
