Radeon HD 5000 series
By Matthew Fitzpatrick
The Radeon HD 5000 series of Graphic Processing units (also known as the evergreen series) is a new series of GPU's from ATI. This new series of GPU's is the first series to fully support Microsoft's new DirectX 11. Cards in this series have technology that allows the use of more than one monitor to create the image. If you want a modern high-end gaming PC the Radeon HD 5000 series is the way to go. The series is made up of four levels of cards. The lowest level or entry level of cards are redwood and cedar. They will be released in early 2010. The next level up or the mid-level cards are called Jupiter. The Jupiter cards start with 57. For example the Radeon HD 5770 is a Jupiter based HD 5000 series card. The next level up or the high-end level are called Cypress. Cypress cards start with 58, the Radeon HD 5850 is a Cypress based card. The last and highest level or the Enthusiast level is called Hemlock(cards start with 59). Instead of having its own version of the GPU inside it, the Hemlock series instead uses two of the Cypress level GPU's making it the most powerful HD 5000 series card type.
