Oasis of the Seas
By Matthew Fitzpatrick
MS Oasis of the Seas is the newest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet. After her completion in late 2009 the Oasis became the world's largest passenger vessel at 225,000 gross tons. The next closest ship in size is Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the seas at 154,000 gross tons. Oasis of the seas is 1,181 feet long, 154 feet wide at the water line, and 236 feet tall (starting at water line). It has a maximum speed of 22.6 knots using three engine pods that hang below the ship. She can accommodate 5,400 passengers with its 2,615 crew members. At $1.4 Billion it is one of the most expensive ships ever built. The ship is made up of seven sections or neighborhoods as Royal Caribbean calls them. They are: Central Park: Area at the center of the ship open to the sky with real plants and trees in it giving it the appearance of Central Park in New York. The pool and sports zone: all the pools and sports areas on the top deck are considered part of this neighborhoods. Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center: Includes the spa and gym of the ship. Boardwalk: The lower aft section of the ship and includes a working carousel. This section is made to feel like Coney island or Atlantic City. Royal Promenade: The central location on the ship located directly below Central Park. The Promenade has shops and restaurants along it. Youth Zone: The kids zone of the ship. Entertainment Place: This includes the theater and the Studio B.
