Inverted Roller Coaster
By Matthew Fitzpatrick
An inverted roller coaster is a roller coaster where the cars ride underneath the track instead of on top. They are similar to the suspended roller coaster the main difference is that in the inverted coaster the cars cannot swing freely, they are fixed. The first inverted roller coaster was built by Swiss roller coaster designers Bolliger & Mabillard in 1992 at Six Flags Great America. The ride was called Batman: The ride and was well liked. In the years to follow it was "cloned" and exact copies exist in many parks around the world. There are however a vast amount of unique inverted roller coasters in the world. Today Bolliger & Mabillard is the number one inverted roller coaster manufacturer. Vekoma, Intamin AG also manufacture inverted coasters but Bolliger & Mabillard has made the most unique and the biggest invented coasters on the planet. Currently the biggest coaster of this type is called Alpengeist and is located at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Alpengeist is almost 200 feet tall and reaches speeds of 67 mph. It cost the park $20 million to build back in 1997. Inverted roller coasters don't seem to be as popular as they use to be. The flying roller coaster appears to be the next generation of the upside-down tracked roller coaster.
