Accelerator Coaster

By Matthew Fitzpatrick

An accelerator coaster, sometimes called a rocket coaster, is a hydraulically-launched roller coaster built by Intamin AG. Accelerator coasters all have a high and almost constant acceleration during their launch, they also feature magnetic breaks.

The way the launch system works can be described as a super soaker. The hydraulic fluid is pumped into accumulators, a high pressure storage device, building up pressure. At launch all the pressure is released and is then used to turn several hydraulic turbines. A winch is connected to the turbines. The end of the winch cables are attached to a small car that is latched to the train at launch. The turbines turn the winch and pull the cable that pulls the small car which is attached to the roller coaster train. This launch system is very powerful and can accelerate the train to 128 in less than 4 seconds. After the train reaches its target speed the small latch car separates from the train and the train continues. After the launch the track usually goes straight up, crests, then goes straight down. What follows varies depending on the coaster.

The first Accelerator coaster built is called Xcelerator. It was built in 2002 for Knotts Berry Farm in California. It is 205 feet tall and has a max speed of 82 mph.

The first Accelerator coaster to have inversions (go upside down) was Storm Runner. Storm Runner was built in 2005 for Hershey park in Pennsylvania. Its maximum speed is 75 mph with a maximum height of 150 feet. Storm Runner goes upside down 3 times during the 50 second trip.

The current fastest Accelerator is called Kingda Ka located at Six Flags the Great Adventure in New Jersey. It has a maximum speed of 128 mph and a maximum height of 456 feet.
